This 2021 article explores the state of middle ear screening and rates of otitis media in a childhood population.
A key finding is that 64% of children aged 1-5 have hearing loss due to otitis media. Hearing loss, even when temporary, can affect speech and language acquisition. By incorporating middle ear screening into paediatric visits we can improve detection of otitis media, treating earlier otitis media earlier and preventing impacts on speech, auditory processing and academic performance.
